Current fund raising projects

Maria's Home

Picture
This year it is our intention to help the family of Maria Corca who is known to ACA locally.  She and her husband have 11 children and 4 grandchildren who all live together along with her husband’s brother who has Downs Syndrome.  They need a communal kitchen and bathroom and are willing to do the building work themselves, but the cost is in the region of £17,000 as building materials have increased in price greatly over the pandemic.

Rora have donated £5,000 and we have agreed initially to send them a further £3,000 and will look to send further funds as we are able.  We were told yesterday that the foundations have now been dug so this project is progressing.

Meralina and her family

This is a family who live in a village called Tahaun which is about  30 mins from Vulcan. Jo and Ame, two of the volunteers from ACA, have been visiting this family with Rica who is one of the workers in the canteen.

The mothers name is Merelina and she has 11 children who are all grown up and 4 of them have remained at home.
She is also raising 3 grandchildren, a girl aged 18 months and two boys aged 13 and 16 years old.
Her husband committed suicide in 2018.
They live in a caravan and two small rooms made of wood with corrugated metal as the roof.

They had the foundation down for a building but couln't continue unless they could do all the correct paperwork for the land and building and they didn't have the money.
Aurora Christian Association helped them resolve this issue with the paperwork and to build some rooms and helped with wood for winter as they are very poor.

We have part funded the building of three rooms on the existing concrete base on her property and she has already moved in.  We have also helped financially for a kitchen extension, the chimney for her wood stove and for her to have water piped in.

marianna and her family

Within the village of Tauhan lives another family with 7 children ranging in age from 18 to 3yrs old.
This is a picture of the outside of their home.  As you can see, the building is made of odds and ends of wood, corrugated iron and other materials along with a tiled roof.
This building must have been standing for over 30 years as the mother, Marianna, has been living here since she was adopted at 2yrs old.

The building comprises two rooms.
However, only one of them is usable at the moment as the ceiling and floor of the second room are both in very poor condition.
The ceiling of the room has collapsed over approximately 50% of the area.
The floorboards which are very uneven and, in some places, broken.
Bare earth can be seen through the holes It is unclear what has caused the deterioration of the room.

It is believed that the state of the roof and the sagging in the middle could well be the cause of the collapsed ceiling.  The last picture shows their water supply, a hosepipe and an outside sink.
They do have electricity within the property, but this is not working properly at the moment due to the collapse of the ceiling.
